I’ve heard many versions of the song “The House of the Rising Sun”. The early versions by Leadbelly, Josh White, Libby Holman, Texas Alexander, Odetta. Then Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Doc Watson, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, The Animals / Eric Burdon, The Beatles. Also The Doors, Dolly Parton, Pink Floyd, Muse, Duran Duran, Bon Jovi, The Ventures, Gary Glitter, Tori Amos, Jimi Hendrix, Frijid Pink, Led Zeppelin, Ten Years After, Santa Esmeralda. Then the great voices (after Joan Baez): Nina Simone, Odetta, Georgia Turner, Mary Hopkin, Tracy Chapman, Sinead O’Connor (!!!). But most of all (as a guitarist) I was impressed by: Tommy Emmanuel. I heard him life in Berlin last year. I like this old guitar he prefers to play with. Seems to be from his mother. Some various modern microphone-systems are built in…

Somehow I’m hoowed on the very first, original, time I listen to it: it coud be because it was over the Free Europe station, in the dardness from behind th eiron curtain. But I do enjoy the guitar: I will keep Tmmy in mind. Thanks.

of course it is not good, for a woman, to become an object for men in such a red light district house. I don’t know, why this song became cult. To avoid sexuality or to agree?

I took Mr DV to see Tommy in the UK as a birthday present a few years ago. He loved it; he rates him as the best guitar player in the world. I love the way the veneer has been worn off his guitar – my laptop is going the same way!

yes it’s a worn off guitar, I saw him life in Berlin, – but it’s nice to hear, that your laptop is going the same way – so – we love our tools, that’s good!

that tommy emanuel guy just isn’t fair. i liked how you did it. Add the great Doc Watson to your list. He plays House of the Rising Sun in major key and does it just beautifully.

That’s a different tune than the other version that he does. The other one is in major key. I’ll send it to you. I haven’t posted UTubes on my blog out of some kind of principle, and I don’t release others’ copywrited material, but I guess, what the heck. I’ll try to find a copy of an old Doc Watson record.

as I read, that you lived in Brooklyn (Jewish – we have Jewish friends in Queens) – David Bromberg came into my mind – he played wonderful guitar similar to Doc Watson …

Correction! I come from the noble borough of the Bronx.
And I can’t succeed in sending you that version of Doc and House of Rising Sun. I did blog it myself about a year ago – but in minor key.
