Actually I’m discussing with a British author pacifism, World War II results etc. – and how it is related to the question of today, if a military intervention should be vs. Assad in Syria

below a fragment of my e-mail writing series:
As a German with focus on philosophy – Hannah Arendt / Theodor Adorno / Karl Jaspers etc. – I always asked: What now, what is the result after 1945 (I was born 1945, started my life in an orphanage without any parents): To blame is the mental madness of a whole nation, not only Hitler; and to stop is everything, what continues to support the same racism.

Living in Germany I had many problems with my statement. My best friends became a Jewish family which managed to escape from my hometown 1940 to New York. We often visited them in Manhattan. My biggest enemies, lifelong: German right-wing social networks. My result of those decades: Let’s accept pacifism as a basic ideology.

Actually I’m very glad about the British parliament saying “NO!” to an intervention in Syria. Today they are discussing in St. Petersburg on the G20 summit, how to react vs. Assad. I hope the UN, not a single president, will decide about the future in Syria.

Looking back to WW2: to be a proud pilot = that’s a NO-GO for me – no matter, if he is German, French, British, American, Russian, Iranian etc. – am I wrong? Nevertheless there are airshows in USA, France, UK, Russia etc. as a continuing propaganda tool of the military industry. They are forbidden in modern Germany.

  2. Yes, it will make it a tiny bit better to know that a decision is made by the UN, not one president, if the decision is for military intervention in Syria.
In my lifetime, I’ve seen the effects of Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan, the lives lost on both sides. How can we continue to let innocent men, women and children be murdered? How can we send in innocent young men and women to fight these battles? I’m thinking of my grandchildren and what they will face when they grow older.

    • I very often think, those who are part of the military weapon industry, owners, lobbyists – how many politicians are earning [George W. Bush]? More control! For example a Greek minister took millions for private use from the German weapon industry (he was friendly enough to order more than Greece could pay) – and not a single Greek law was against him…

  4. Interesting as always to hear your perspective Frizztext. Like you I haven’t stuck to the prevailing political beliefs of the time of my birth and upbringing. Although I love the individual members of my family who were in the Forces and respect all honourable servicemen, I am peace loving myself.
We went to many airshows as kids and loved them but you are right it’s arms trade propaganda. And I’ve got zero respect for the arms trade I’m afraid.

  6. Great post Frizz but I don’t trust the UN or any leaders, including the President… All get swayed by $$$$$ and all are highly influenced by others. NO MORE WAR!

  8. Wars/conflicts are terrible things that have been going on from the beginning of time. While those in power sit back and tell others what to do, it is inevitable that many will suffer. I believe in peace and wish for a better world where people are not treated like pawns in a game of chess. Sadly, the only thing the world has learned from history is that we haven’t learned from history and will continue to repeat our mistakes at the cost of many lives. Sometimes however, fighting back is required. If we remained pacifists, the other side would just run us over because they have no respect for life, equality or anything else that is good. True peace requires all people to be pacifists. The death of those who fought for peace makes me want to aspire to be a better person so it does not happen again. Remembering them, for the people they really were, with talents, families etc., is I hope a means of making people understand how wars are a complete waste of precious lives.
