Let’s talk about French lifestyle and existentialism! I once wrote about Jean-Paul SARTRE (in German), maybe I should try to translate?

In his own origin-family Sartre regarded himself as a stranger, from early childhood on. When he applied after concluded study for the office of a secondary school teacher, he was rejected, supposedly because he had tried to express original ideas. France was not probably much differently than the neighboring country Germany dressing up with “occupational bans” (“Berufsverbote” – like the McCarthy era).
The fact that Sartre visited ostentatiously the heads of the German political terrorists of the Baader-Meinhof-group (RAF = Rote Armee Fraktion) imprisoned in Stuttgart, would have brought him in Germany absolutely the loss of a profession as a teacher. Not in France. He became famous as a thinker. Once he said: “The power lives on the fact that it is not held by decent people for possible …” – and with those break-outs he styled a new level of doubt, philosophy – and existentialism. A thinker needs no intact eyes, but a clear mind): I believe, although Sartre began as a Stalinist, he would give no more applause to the today’s cruel actions of Islamists and other terror-ideologies.
His remark “One should commit no stupidity twice, the choice is, in the end, largely enough …” strongly allows to suppose that the thinker, the always spiritual pleasure experienced by the fact that he forbore from himself and sketched his identity anew, that this thinker to the terrorism of the todays would face negative.
As a Phenomenologue, in the continual glance on Edmund Husserl (and a little more embarrassingly: Martin Heidegger) he might be to be seen as the representative of spiritual change-ability, who would know how to withdraw courageously from own old statements once said in stupidity, – alike once the German chancellor Konrad Adenauer mentioned: “What interests me that, what I have said yesterday?”. The admission of the mistake is also a big achievement of a thinker – and in this respect is important that Sartre does not fall into oblivion even more than it has already happened!

In seiner eigenen Herkunfts-Familie empfand sich Sartre als Fremder, von klein an. Als er sich nach abgeschlossenem Studium um das Amt eines Studienrates bewarb, wurde er abgelehnt, angeblich weil er versucht hatte, originelle Ideen zu äußern. Frankreich war wohl nicht viel anders als das sich mit “Berufsverboten” schmückende Nachbarland Deutschland.
Dass Sartre demonstrativ die in Stuttgart inhaftierten Köpfe der RAF besuchte, hätte ihn hierzulande sicherlich auch um den Beruf gebracht. “Die Gewalt lebt davon, dass sie von anständigen Leuten nicht für möglich gehalten wird…” sagte er andererseits einmal – und damit griff er hellseherisch (denn dafür benötigt man keine intakten Augen, nur einen klaren Verstand): hellseherisch seiner Zeit voraus: Ich glaube, obwohl Sartre als Stalinist begann, er würde den heutigen Überraschungstaten der Islamisten keinen Beifall zollen.
Seine Bemerkung “Man soll keine Dummheit zweimal begehen, die Auswahl ist schließlich groß genug…” lässt stark vermuten, dass der Denker, der stets geistigen Genuss dadurch erlebte, dass er von sich selbst Abstand nahm und seine Identität neu entwarf, dass dieser Denker dem Terrorismus der heutigen Tage ablehnend gegenüber stehen würde.

Als Phänomenologe, der er war, im steten Hinsehen auf Husserl (und etwas peinlicher: Heidegger) dürfte er als Repräsentant mutiger geistiger Wandlungs-Fähigkeit zu sehen sein, der tapfer sich auf das (einst Adenauersche) Statement zurückzuziehen wüsste: “Was interessiert mich das, was ich gestern gesagt habe”. Das Eingeständnis des Irrtums ist auch eine große denkerische Leistung – und insofern ist wichtig, dass Sartre nicht noch mehr in Vergessenheit gerät, als es schon geschehen ist!
