Paul Simon learned that from Martin Carthy 1965 (Steeleye Span), but the song was first published in a song book 1673! Very British!

    I think your version is a great improvement, Frizz. I used to love the Paul Simon version, but it is a bit saccharine. And V-E-R-Y slow.
