Glenn Pellito from Florida wrote the lyrics for my funeral as demanded by myself. On that day, when he really sings, I’ll jump out off the coffin again to give him a hug! C. Schlote made the church feeling with organ and bass for our ironical version of the famous “Amazing Grace” anthem and Ian McAulay added a kind of bagpipe e-guitar flight…

comments by the song writer Glenn Pellito from Florida: “Great template from my friend Frizz. I was inspired by the title and by what Frizz wrote when he first posted the track. This is what came from it.I hope you like it…” I had written before he was inspired to create the lyrics: “I don’t know what they will play on my funeral – maybe this? I hope some musicians add their talent to make it sound better! And: maybe European funerals should learn from New Orleans funerals!”
related:
“let me tell you
about a man I know
he played the guitar
could on a show
people came from miles
and miles and miles around
the day they put his body
in the ground
he had fire in his fingertips
lightning in his hands
people would stop and sing
hey there goes the guitar man
he plays so soft and gentle
make a good man cry
now we do stop
and wonder why
there he goes there he goes
he’s a guitar man
the fire in his fingers
and the lightning in his hands
he plays so soft and gentle
make a good man cry
now we do stop
and wonder why:
[instrumental break]
women cried and the men, they shook their heads
they raised the glass and he raised up his soul
wow, he’s up in heaven, playing with the best
now maybe jamming with the Lord…”
(I’m trying to figure out every passage of this anthem; not easy for a foreigner like me, to understand every word) 🙂

Funeral Waltz
(Lyrics by Glenn Pellito 2014)
Let me tell you about a man I know
He played the guitar – Put on a show
People came from miles around the day they put his body
in the ground
He had fire in his fingertips – lightning in his hands
People would stop and say, there goes the guitar man
He played soft and gentle – make a grown man cry
Now we stop and wonder why
There he goes, there he goes he’s the guitar man
Fire in his fingertips – lightning in his hands
He plays so soft and gentle – make a grown man cry
Now we stop and wonder why
Woman cried _ the men they shook their heads
They raised a glass – they raised up his soul
He’s up in heaven _ playing with the best
Now he be jamming with the lord
These lyrics were inspired by the Wikiloops Jam Template # 19571 by FrizzGuitar (Dietmar from Germany). Frizz is a guitarist that enjoys the finger picking style of a time gone by. His notes on the
template read: “I don’t know what they will play on my funeral – maybe this? I hope some musicians add their talent to make it sound better!” This is my take on his comment…

hi Kathryn,
do you know, on which funerals AMAZING GRACE was performed?
P.S.:
I was very moved, when AMAZING GRACE (of course with the original lyrics, in an acapella version) was sung in East Germany after the horrible school massacre in Erfurt.
Also this was sung on the funeral of Whitney Houston (Amy Winehouse not?)
– and when I wrote about the life of Mahalia Jackson, I noticed, that she fought (and won) the battle for the right that also women (not only male persons) could get the typical New Orleans funeral street marching service!

New Orleans does host quite a procession and the cemeteries are just phenomenally interesting to visit !
I could google it but who was buried to Amazing Grace? I am now singing it at the top of my lungs !

actually I’m trying to learn the fingering of Rev. Robert T. Wilkins playing PRODIGAL SON for his LP “REMEMBER ME” – yes I remember him – and the moment, when I met my father after 40 years of searching, he (his brother bad Heinz) put me into an orphanage directly after birth. When I discovered bad Heinz, he shouted: what you do, disturbing us, is not legal, go away…

Hope you are not in need of it in the near future. I have heard Amazing Grace played on a bugle at the graveside instead of Taps. Very moving.

5yrs ago this month we arranged two family funerals 10 days apart. I think we did find the right music for both father and brother but it would have been good to have something prepared in advance as you have. Hope you don’t need it anytime soon though!
