J.J. Cale R.I.P.

Pity, yesterday J.J. Cale died. Another one of my generation. Not only I have admired his guitar style, but also his life style was a role model – a special mood transported by his laconic vocals and his living in a caravan tour bus. I always like to simplify his compositions replayed on my guitar, “Drifter’s Wife” for example:

background music: my tribute to J.J. Cale
chord progress: C G B7 Em – G/D7 G/C D7 G
below: me, playing a last time “Drifter’s Wife”, composed by J.J. Cale in his typical “laid back” fingerpicking Tulsa style, a mixture of blues, rockabilly and country elements …
CD cover (6)
recently I was asked at my soundcloud website “fingerstyle_guitar”: “Lovely finger picking. How long have you been playing guitar?” – I answered: I’m 68 – so I play guitar 60 years, reached not a high level – but since I’m retired I discovered this passion new … P.S.: I hope, I have 6 years left now (J.J. Cale reached 74), to add some more fingerpicking compositions as a daily meditation …

  8. A sad loss and a touching tribute indeed Frizz. I grew up listening to his records, loving every track . . . a quiet, unassuming master of his craft.

  12. How sad. My parents used to play Troubadour when I was little, songs of my childhood, travelling memories.

    • dear spider,
about your melanom in your eye:
I have a bubble in my eyeball too and thought at first I would become blind immediately and prepared to quit writing and photography and began to focus on music – but then the doctor said, it would not be dangerous, no cancer etc. – I just had to learn to accept, that there is a always a floating cloud in my panorama – O.K.

    • thank you for this well written tribute to J.J. – I like your intro:
“When I heard the news that J.J. Cale had died I was driving in my car with my wife…”
Frizz-reply: When I was playing guitar, sitting in my garden, my wife ran to me and said: They just said on the TV: J.J. Cale died!

  15. Sad news. You have done a wonderful tribute with your fingerpicking.
I hope you get to play for many, many more years.
The women in my family live a long time, but I’m not so sure that trend will continue with me. My Grandmother is 97 years old, soon to be 98!

    • I’m sure, that you, celebrating your life with bird-watching, painting and writing – meditation, supporting your mother, fighting vs. cancer: have so much dignity and density that you can be proud. Not the quantity counts but the quality…

  16. Hearing JJ Cale for the first time in the late 70’s was wonderful not only because he was so good as what he did but his music was actually therapeutic; I felt better about my life when I listened to him, less confused and calmer. We played him again on our first campervan trip in Holland two weeks ago and it still feels good. Bless you JJ.
