TRAIN TO BERLIN
Our train was 90 minutes late. A young man had made suicide jumping suddenly on the railroad track waiting behind a curve in a tunnel. The driver of the engine still was shocked. All passengers too. We discovered a lonesome woman on a bench waiting quietly. She was the famous German ex-bishop Margot Käßmann. We talked with her about suicide short before Christmas. Three and a half hours later, the train made 250 km/h again, I remembered, because we came near to Spandau Prison, the discussion of the evening before we had: with the grandson of Karl Dönitz (leader of Germany after Hitler’s death). He (like us) had seen the movie about the submarine / U-boat U-156, shooting down the ship Laconia. After that human disaster (the German submarine U-156, trying to rescue many people from the ship Laconia, was attacked by US-bombers) Karl Dönitz gave the order, in the future not to rescue enemies swimming in the ocean. 1942. The train reached Berlin. Thousands of bureaus with light. Countless merry-go-rounds: Christmas time.

This is a gorgeous shot but what a sad story. It’s actually a disorder that happens during certain seasons – SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), which makes people do self-injurious things during supposedly-celebratory moments. I imagine that you must all have been in shock by the incident.

Terrible tragedy, especially at Christmas. It’s interesting though, that you were told it was a suicide. I remember when I used to live in Australia they used not to report train suicides for fear it would spark a rash of copy-cats. I wonder if that is still the same?

they don’t call it suicide, the officials through the loud-speakers have the term “Personenschaden” – personal injury, human damage (google translate tried to give its very best)

oh my heart jumped, as I discovered this train from the island Ruegen, Baltic Sea, East Germany: my mother lived there (we could not come to each other, she lived on the other side of the Iron Curtain).

Oh gosh Dietmar that is an amazing photo! But what a sad story – when someone wants to commit suicide and jumps in front of a train they don’t think of the grief and pain they cause the train driver and the passengers.

You know, Frizz, I was on the Amtak coming home from Philadelphia last night. I logged in for a little while and saw this post. I thought, it is so strange that I was thinking about what a time warp riding a train can be. It carries us ahead to where ever we need to go, but also can become a thing that carries us backward…you know into. I meet a father with his sick daughter on the train. They made the trip to get treatment for her at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Also, there are people here that kill themselves or others by pushing them(selves) onto the tracks in front of an arriving train.
Your picture of the train arriving to Berlin has a lyrical mood just like all your lovely NYC images in your book “New York: In a Lyrical Mood”

It is too bad that a Personenschaden took place. I remember the word as meaning “ending life.” When I was at the Historisches Museum der Stadt Wien to install an exhibit there, an art installer told me about his brother who also had a Personenschaden, his brother ended his life himself.
