Weekly Photo Challenge: Change

The biggest experience in my life (born 1945 in Germany) was the breaking through the Berlin Wall, even the fall of the complete “Iron Curtain” in Europe 1989. The oppression by communism, secret service (Stasi), military, hate of the narrow minded vs. the educated – all that was stopped by a not bloody civil protest 1989, East and West Germany came together again. A reunion for example never ever took place between North and South Korea …

  8. We visited East Germany just after this happened. We were shocked at the difference between there and the south (Bavaria) which we knew well. I gather things have changed dramatically now. That’s good. Thanks for sharing

  16. Perfect example of change for the better. Was that car painted on the wall?

    Like

    • that car (typical EAST German product TRABI) was a famous graffiti on the wall – a great metaphoric symbol. Actually they are deleting again parts of the wall (the so called East Side Gallery) for a hotel building. The money makers are giving the new orders, NOT artists, thinkers, protesters are creating the rule of the united country. Nevertheless the hope remains in my heart, that thoughts and wishes still have the power to CHANGE bad social and political conditions.

My father (der stammt aus Nordfriesland) caught the first plane he could get. He had a close friend who lived in West Berlin and he spent a week at the wall celebrating. I think there were many Germans, who for many years on both sides of the wall, secretly wished for that wall to fall. For some reason I don’t think the same can be said for North and South Koreans.

I like what you wrote. That was truly magnificent. We humans just keep imprisoning our selves, then emancipating ourselves!
