moment of illusion

My most viewed snap shot (44,000 views) is the one featuring a woman with umbrella, leaving the Public Library in Manhattan. I often asked myself, what could be the reason for such an interest? Maybe it is the fact that the face is hidden? By the way, I also have a photo with face: when she entered the library. Recently I found a gallery at flickr.com titled “HIDDEN FACES” introducing the work of the photographer Natia Rekhviashvili. Photography blogger comments: “By showing only the back of each women, the pictures capture a sense of solitude, thoughtfulness and mysterious beauty…”

  1. My attention was captured by the image. I think it’s the mysterious factor. The fact that it’s raining, she’s so prominent in the photo. Overall very strong.

  2. For me, it’s the combination of the beauty of what we see of the woman, together with the mystery… above all, the expectation that isn’t answered. It’s a very beautiful picture.

  3. I think that every time we see a picture of a person where we don’t see their face, it becomes even more interesting because we can dream ourselves in that situation… it is a lovely image that speaks tons! 🙂

  4. I do love this image – in fact, I think I was one of the commenters the first time around! Perhaps there is a bit of mystery about it about who she might be…I think I just like the colors, textures!

It is a beautiful photo; and I think the man glancing at her adds to the sense of wanting to know her. I wonder if it would be the same if a woman was looking at her?

  7. It’s the mystery of her that makes us want to know her more.
    Love it, too.

  8. it seems to me she is a beautiful woman, tall, slender, elegant, so that captures attention, and with her face hidden she might be anyone, so the viewer can fantasise …the subdued lighting and the glancing man also encourage erotic thoughts … perhaps they are unconsciously thinking something like “she might need shelter from the rain, I could invite her for a coffee …” … great photo frizz 🙂

  10. Hi Frizztext! I saw this photo a week ago when I was looking for street photography inspiration and I was like “Wait, is this Mr. Frizztext from WordPress?” Your photo was featured on smashing magazine back in 2008. Not sure if you were aware about this. Hehe.

  11. Mistery and lights are sometimes the secret…not only the hidden faces. I have other pictures with hidden faces but this one ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/iceman755/7848840890/ ) is the most viewed. I also have other black and white pictures, other with a good light….
Yours has something with the beauty, the silhouette and the rain. The look of the man on the right to. There’s a story in this picture. Even if a picture is good, the one with a story behind, will always be the better one.

I think this photo speaks volumes without being obvious.. you are immediately drawn to the woman but you can only see her back. I love her dress! She seems mysterious and attractive and then there is a man looking at her, seemingly captured by her beauty.

  15. I’m not sure it’s mysterious actually. It’s very relaxing with its almost monochromatic scheme, the suggestion of the cool freshness that comes with rain, the rhythm of rounded shapes against square onse and flat-black against shiny brown. The symmetry is perfect, just slightly off center.

I loved this photo the first time I saw on your post. It’s a beautiful photo. She is beautiful, elegant, and classic, not sure mysterious. I think the photo also gives a calm feeling seeing her walking slowly in rain.

  17. I love the photo probably for the same reasons you say – the mystery of it. I think with the man who also looks at her, makes you think there is a hidden beauty that she is not showing to the camera. Also it’s raining and she’s wearing a dress which I would assume that when it’s raining you’d have a coat as well as an umbrella.

  19. It’s a truly outstanding image. We can’t see the woman’s face, but the man passing by on the sidewalk can. The composition is great and I think that by him being able to see what we can’t creates interest, mystery, or curiosity. I feel like I could just stare at this image for hours.
