When the Berlin Wall fell 1989, it became a symbol for liberty, and that it is possible to join East and West without any blood shed, ignoring the “Iron Curtain“, ignoring all the military, waiting brainless to act. A peaceful revolution. In a happiness state of mind artists from all over the world made the Berlin Wall colorful. I often shot photos there (watch below). But actually they are destroying the so called “East Side Gallery“, because some architects need space for some tall hotels etc. – the usual: police comes to block political protesters.

These are fantastic! I love wall art. I was in Berlin right after the wall fell but haven’t been back since. My parents have been recently and said it is amazing. I will have to make it back!

The wall was such an unfortunate period in history. It’s interesting to see how the people on Western side reacted to it by decorating it. There is also an article in today’s Wall Street Journal as well.

That’s what I thought. They have a piece of the wall in front of an office building here in L.A. on Wilshire Blvd. It shows cheery murals of Ronald Reagan and John Kennedy. However, the back side (which most people don’t see or bother to walk around to see) was the eastern side and it was one of most depressing things to look at: some scrawled graffiti and a lot of bullet holes in the concrete. They’ve since painted over that back wall.

Yes, it was up for a number of months before they painted it. The people inside the office building had to look at it and probably demanded it be covered. It was very depressing to look at.

now the luxury architecture planner is hesitating – and the mayor of Berlin, Wowereit, talked one should search for another solution – well he talked much about opening a new airport – still under construction for years …
