Story Challenge: Letter “L”

Hi Bloggers! Do you have to share a story or a short reflection tagged with the letter “L”? For example I’ve written about Language as a Lifeform, Libraries and Lightnings, about Lips and Legs, Loneliness or Love, London or Lanzarote, Lofoten or Lava, Lions or Lambs, Lamps or Lute players, Lasers and Listeners, Lakes and Life Guards, Landmines and Leaves, Laos or Lofts, Letters and Linens, Light and Lenses, Lavender or Lighthouses etc. – I’m sure you’ll find an own story or a short reflection tagged with “L”! Feel free to add in the comments the link to your personal interpretation of the letter “L”!!!

LANGUAGE = LIFE FORM

“One can easily imagine a language consisting only of orders and messages in battle
or a language consisting only of questions and an expression of affirmation and negation.
And countless others. To imagine a language means to imagine a life form.”
Quotation (translated by frizztext), introducing Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889 – 1951), Austrian-born philosopher, professorship in philosophy at the University of Cambridge (1939 – 1947); more at Ludwig Wittgenstein

QUESTION:

  • Do you like to ask questions?
  • Do you accept orders immediately? Which made problems?

  4. Very interesting questions you have here about ‘life forms’ and nice discussion on ‘language’ as well – and our nonverbal forms of communication as can be clearly seen in this photograph. As a teacher, I’d probably say that I ask endless questions, and ‘orders’ would have to be rationalized and justified. As a psychologist, I share Stanley Milgram’s Obedience Experiment in class, thus, I have my own reservations about ‘blind obedience’ and would often warn my students about not being critical of directions/instructions/orders.

Here is my L contribution for this week:

  9. Just love languages, life learned (that was 4 ‘L’ letter word) me the importance of being able to understand others – before start disagree with other people so it is important to know what they really said and not just think you can guess what they said – one of my favorite philosophers, danish Soren Kierkegaard once said, “For to move people then you must talk il them where they are and not where you wanted them to be “- in my opinion one of the best rules of living …

I’m danish (it was the first learned language) the local jutland dialect which I love (was next learned language) – a large part of my childhood was at the border between Germany and Denmark on both sides which was spoken most german (so this was my next learned language) – my best friend at that time had hungarian father and english mother who was speaking english in their homes (so that was my next learned language) – so I had a dutch girlfriend when her mother spoke I did not think she liked me, but found out that this was the dutch and she liked me I found out (it was the next language I learned) – then I got later a french canadian boyfriend her father was an officer stationed in West Germany, it brought the french into my world (it was the next learned language) – later spanish, norwegian, swedish come to – it’s great to be able to understand what people say and write – a few of them speak or write I not myself – but I understand them, and I like that – it’s cool… 😉 😉 😉

  19. In answer to your question (and to paraphrase another joke): Why shouldn’t I like to ask questions??
My entry for the L Challenge, actually the only post I could find is this Low Down Minor Blues – which I feel sort of proud about because it’s a very simple chord progression that I myself have never heard done before in the blues genre. http://bumbastories.wordpress.com/2011/06/01/low-down-minor-blues/

Yes, I like to ask questions. If the orders don’t feel right, I generally ask more questions.

I think I am caught up on your blog postings for now. I got quite behind.

  23. Hello Frizztext. When I saw your image, I thought how rare it is in Australia to see so many people obeying directions. I have chosen the Language of the Land for this week. The mumble of the Mountains. The whispers of the winds and the birds. It is the language I understand the best. http://abcnellibell49.wordpress.com/2012/09/20/l-is-for-the-language-of-the-land/

    • hi Lynne, thank you for:
“The Language that speaks most clearly to me
is the Whispering Language of the Land.
The Lifeform of my Valley. I understand this language.
The rustle of the leaf lizard on old wood.
The silent night weave of the small spiders.
The roll of the hills and the curling cadence of the valleys…
The thundering splatter of storms from the Sea…”
