Aged four, I once was in a home of rich people; they owned a cuckoo clock; so all my life I wished to become the owner of a cuckoo clock too – now on my 66. birthday my friends Jutta & Edgar brought one! Now my life has a frame, day and (even) night, each half hour.
+
I’ve introduced the cuckoo clock via Skype already to my enthusiastic grandchildren in Munich and Berlin. They are now literally electrified in their early predatory instincts by the clock’s details: killed deer, pheasant, rabbit, hunting horn … My cuckoo (his name is Heinz) consolidates my life, in fact, by every half hour additions, also my nocturnal wakefulness is so comforting accompanied and framed.
True, he has a night shut-off (not digital but in the form of a nail, blocking the door) – but I cannot use it. It breaks my heart already, that he cannot start to a flight through my home. But at night I’ll have to put my ear-sensitive son-in-law in handcuffs, when he visits us, because he has threatened me to hang out the clock’s iron weights until the next morning (something like cutting the balls of a bull…)

I usually can’t sleep from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. when my wife is lost in deep dreams. The cuckoo makes me feel, that I’m not alone – and my cat too, but she isn’t really amused – she always stares confused to the little bird, when he is calling.

Ahh….I once visited a home (as a child) that had dozens of cuckoo clocks of all shapes and sizes on a wall in her den….all synchronized to go off at the same time. I fell in love with cuckoos and always wanted one for my home. Not so sure about the nighttime stuff, though. Enjoyed your post.

What a beautiful cuckoo clock. Dreams can come true… with a little help from family and friends!
I love the photo of the confused kitty. Great capture!

What a lovely story about your clock! Your friends were so nice to buy it for you 🙂 My dad used to build clocks in the garage – he truly made some beautiful ones but never a cuckoo. Thanks for sharing! Peace and blessings, Terri

One of my mother’s best friends had several cuckoo clocks in her house and when Mom would take us kids to visit her, we would stand underneath them waiting to see that cuckoo pop out! We were totally enthralled with them.
I enjoyed hearing your clock–it’s a beautiful– and the second version was hilarious–thanks for sharing your story and linking to my poem too. It’s nice to meet you.

I have the one I long dreamed of as well and it looks pretty much exactly like yours. Antlers and all. I got a Furbie as well. Both of them have defeated me with their noise – but a dream satisfied is SO good. Where I write the cuckoo left is on the wall to my left.

compare “The Coo Coo Bird”
– lyrics by Thomas Clarence Ashley.
Oh, the cuckoo she’s a pretty bird
She warbles as she flies
She never hollers coo coo
till the fourth day of July
Gonna build me log cabin
On a mountain so high
So I can see Willie
as he goes on by
Well, I’ve played cards in Texas
And I’ve played cards in Maine
Oh, I’ll bet you five dollars
I’ll beat you next game
Jack of diamonds, jack of diamonds
Oh, I know you of old
You robbed my poor pockets
of silver and gold
Rye whiskey, rye whiskey
Oh, I know you of old
You robbed my poor pockets
of silver and gold
Sometimes I feel much younger
Sometimes I feel so old
Sometimes the warm sun shines
Sometimes it’s dreadful cold
Oh, the cuckoo she’s a pretty bird
How I wish she was mine
She never drinks water
she only drinks wine
Oh, the cuckoo she’s a pretty bird
She warbles as she flies
She never hollers coo coo
till the fourth day of July

Gonna build me log cabin
On a mountain so high
So I can see Willie
As he goes passing by.
REFRAIN
Oh, the coo-coo,
she’s a pretty bird
She wobbles as she flies
She never says coo-coo
Till the fourth day July.
I’ve played cards in England
I’ve played cards in Spain
I’ll bet you ten dollars
I beat you next game.
REFRAIN
Jack-a-Diamonds, Jack-a-Diamonds
I’ve known you from old
You’ve robbed my poor pocket
Of my silver and my gold.
My horses ain’t hungry
They won’t eat your hay
I’ll drive on a little further
I’ll feed ‘em on my way.
