Osama Bin Laden, the head of Al-Qaeda, he had changed the world with his fight vs. the US – and the United States of America changed the world with the fight vs. terrorism. A reason now for Barack Obama to withdrawal US-troops from Afghanistan? It has been expensive enough – both: money and death toll on both sides. Or will the Washington administration continue to fight vs. the al-Qaeda hydra in more and more countries?

P.S.:
I am amused, to find a quotation of the old Greek historian Thucydides in a modern political blog – visit jacobbreach.wordpress.com: “A nation that draws too broad a difference between its scholars and its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards, and its fighting done by fools.” -Thucydides – frizz-comment: I fear, no one in the United States or in Arabian nations will hesitate to walk their usual line. Greek philosophy is without any influence. Sad.

Strange, that I put this Thucydides quotation on my front-page? Sorry, that I studied 7 years ancient Greek. But what is the best interpretation? University intelligence must support the development of military technologies? Or military headquarters must learn new strategies? More hesitating? More acceptance of strange cultures? Staying home as a clever strategy? I loved some statements of Socrates and Epicurus, yes, and Thucydides too…

It is embarrassing that politicians celebrate the death of a person as a success. There must be other possibilities to handle with enemies.
Nevertheless, in this manner they position themselves on the same level with the terrorists which wish the death of people or accept it approvingly …

I agree with DER_EMIL.
It is strange to celebrate the death of a person.
I can’t understand their feelings.

Thanks for the reference. Also it is a shame that Greek philosophy has fallen out of vogue. If more people studied it we would be in better shape.

Thanks for inspiration, Jacob E. Breach! Strange, that I put this Thucydides quotation on my front-page now too? Sorry, that I studied 7 years ancient Greek. But what is the best interpretation? I think that quote has a lot to say for the current government of the United States. All too often the bureaucrats and the defense officials do not communicate or work together. Our soldiers and defense officials must understand the principles of government and the necessity for philosophy and education and our scholars must understand the necessity for the defense establishment. I believe Thucydides had in mind the warrior scholar as the ideal leader.

examples for the bridge, which can be find sometimes between both sides?
1 – the decision to use cruise missiles with weapons not only as a spy? (politicians for clever military)
2 – the decision not to get involved too much in Libya, giving leadership to European NATO structures? (military, following wise hesitating politicians?)
